What exactly is an HD resolution? What makes a camera or a recorder earn the HD title? The HD- stands for High definition, which is to say they are not a standard definition. Up until the late ’90s and early 2000s Television broadcasts were exclusively analog signals sent in TV lines, 480 Tv lines to be precise. In the digital resolution, this is comparable to 6480×480, also known as 480p. Once televisions were able to accept digital broadcasts in a format with higher quality than 480 TVL, they had to standardize the quality gap by saying that 480p- or 480TVl were ‘standard definition’ and the new emerging 720p (1280×720) was “high definition or HD”. Since then, even more, high-definition resolutions have become standard- you might be familiar with Full-HD or 1080p, and 4k also known as 2160p or Ultra-HD. Anything 720p or up is considered HD. So that means HD CCTV cameras are any CCTV cameras that can do 720p, or better image quality.
Today, the term HD might be a bit dated as very few if any new media is produced in anything lower than 720p, which is why it’s more now common to see, SHD, FHD, and UHD for 720p, 1080p, and 2160p respectively. In fact, by today’s standards 720p is to 1080p what 480p was to 720p, and both fall short of 4k. In CCTv we tend to rat eour cameras in megapixels- the number of total pixels in each frame- rather than the P-based resolution standards you see on TVs and Monitors. this is because all TVs and most monitors are 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning their pixels are arranged in a precise ratio, every single time. Cameras may have varying aspect ratios or fields of view- and because of this are better rated in Megapixels to get an idea of quality. Use the chart below to determine how many Megapixels each resolution standard would equate to in terms of visual quality:
720p- 1 Megapixel
1080p- 2 Megapixel
1440p- 4 Megapixel
2160p- 8 Megapixel
